Keratoconus

If you are experiencing progressive blurriness, distorted vision, or high sensitivity to light, you may be dealing with a corneal condition known as keratoconus. At Green Eye Care, Dr. Neil Satija and our expert team specialize in diagnosing, managing, and treating keratoconus to help you achieve the clear, comfortable vision you deserve.

What is Keratoconus?

To understand keratoconus, it helps to understand how the eye works. A healthy cornea—the clear, dome-shaped front window of the eye—is perfectly round, much like a basketball. This smooth, spherical shape allows it to precisely focus light into the eye for crisp vision.

In a patient with keratoconus, the structure of the cornea slowly thins and weakens. As it weakens, the normal pressure inside the eye pushes the cornea outward, causing it to bow and bulge into an irregular cone shape.

Instead of a perfectly round basketball, the cornea becomes more like a lopsided ball or a football. Because the cornea is responsible for focusing most of the light that enters the eye, this lopsided shape bends and scatters the light unevenly.

As a result, patients often experience:

  • Increasingly blurry or distorted vision

  • Double vision or "ghosting" (especially in one eye)

  • Increased sensitivity to glare, bright lights, and halos at night

  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions

⚠️ The Danger of Eye Rubbing (And How We Can Help)

While the exact cause of keratoconus involves genetics and hormonal factors, there is one major environmental factor you can control: eye rubbing.

Chronic eye rubbing is highly associated with the progression of keratoconus. Think of it this way: if your cornea is already weakened and shaped like a lopsided ball, rubbing your eyes is like continuously kicking that ball. The physical trauma and friction of rubbing further damage the delicate collagen fibers in the cornea. This accelerates the thinning process and makes the bulging significantly worse.

Treating the Urge to Rub Your Eyes Telling you not to rub your eyes is easy, but actually stopping can be difficult if your eyes are constantly irritated. At Green Eye Care, we proactively treat the root causes of itchy eyes. Whether you are suffering from seasonal allergies or chronic dry eye syndrome, we can prescribe targeted treatments, soothing eye drops, and therapies to eliminate the itch and protect your corneas from further damage.

Advanced Surgical Treatments & Co-Management

In addition to prescribing specialized contact lenses, Green Eye Care works closely with top corneal specialists throughout the area to co-manage advanced medical and surgical treatments for keratoconus. Depending on the progression of your disease, we may refer you for:

  • Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL): A minimally invasive, FDA-approved procedure that uses UV light and riboflavin (Vitamin B2) eye drops to strengthen the collagen bonds in the cornea. This is highly effective at halting the progression of keratoconus.

  • Intacs: Small, arc-shaped plastic inserts surgically placed into the cornea to help flatten the steep cone shape.

  • Corneal Transplant (Keratoplasty): For severe, advanced cases where the cornea is dangerously thin or scarred, a specialist may replace the diseased cornea with healthy donor tissue.

Important Note: While these surgical procedures are incredible for halting progression, stabilizing the eye, or reversing some of the steepness, they are not a cure-all for your vision. Most patients will still need specialty contact lenses after these treatments to achieve sharp, clear, 20/20 vision.

SynergEyes Scleral Lenses: The Gold Standard for Clear Vision

Whether you are managing keratoconus non-surgically or recovering from a procedure like cross-linking, traditional glasses and soft contacts simply cannot conform to the lopsided shape of your eye.

For optimal vision, we highly recommend scleral contact lenses. These large-diameter, gas-permeable lenses vault entirely over the irregular cornea and rest gently on the less sensitive sclera (the white part of the eye).

This brilliant design creates a tear-filled vault of saline fluid between the lens and the eye. This fluid fills in all the irregular gaps of the "lopsided ball," creating a new, perfectly smooth optical surface. This neutralizes corneal distortions, providing unparalleled visual clarity while keeping the eye deeply hydrated and comfortable.

At Green Eye Care, we proudly fit our patients with premium SynergEyes Scleral Lenses to ensure maximum comfort, superior oxygen flow, and optimized vision.

Take Control of Your Vision Today

Managing keratoconus requires precision, specialized equipment, and a deep understanding of corneal health. Dr. Neil Satija brings extensive experience in specialty lens fittings and disease management.

Because scleral lenses are used to treat a medical condition, the fittings are covered by most vision and medical insurances as a "medically necessary" treatment. Our team is happy to help you navigate your benefits to maximize your coverage.
